Indian Fast Food - PG

The inaugural visit, the first step on our journey to greatness, Indian Fast Food.

With summer drawing to a close and the evenings getting ever-shorter, it seems fitting to rekindle the annual tradition of sculpting a totally sweet winter bod. With that in mind, we made our way to one of Gloucester Road's many restaurants, and birthed the brain-child of Curryous George: A tale of adventure, intrigue and gluttony.

Indian Fast Food isn't located in the most stand-out place; nestled between Asian Spicy and Oh! Calcutta it has tough competition right out of the gate. With a google rating of 4.6 (at the time of writing) it's enough to catch out eye, and the not-quite-shutdown-able decor is just captivating enough to draw us through the door and onto the red, pleather bench seats.

The staff are friendly and welcoming, albeit with a relaxed sense of urgency, but as it's a BYOB restaurant there's no need to take a drinks order and we're soon underway.

Poppadoms first, nice and crunchy without any greasiness, 4 condiments (onion bits, mango chutney, the yellow one and lime pickle). 8/10.

As far as starters go, there is room for improvement. We opted for the Onion Bhajis and they left a lot to be desired. Both dry and oily, which is quite an achievement in itself, without much flavour. 3/10

I opted for the Tilapia Jalfray for my main course, on a bed of garlic naan with pilau rice. The tilapia was fantastically cooked, buttery soft and with just the right level of spice. With whole green chillies left in the sauce it add an exciting element of danger to an otherwise safe and satisfying dish. 8/10.

On the whole, Indian Fast Food struck precisely the right balance between highfalutin establishment and post-piss takeaway; It's cosy without being cramped and the ambience picked up as the restaurant filled out so I'd say it's best to aim to arrive once service has already been underway for a short while. I'd happily return here soon, were it not for our mission to visit every Indian Restaurant in Bristol. 8/10
